A video from an employee went viral after he claimed the store he works at was given a warning for flying military flags on the roof. The rooftop display also includes two United States flags and a Jacksonville Jaguars flag.
"I am so amazed at the amount of support.", said Marcy, another manager.
The verbal altercation happened after the warning upset the customer. Finance manager Shaun, no last name given, posted a video message to the store's Facebook page, saying the city worker also insulted a wounded veteran on her way out of the business.
Other store employees corroborated the account to WJXT, and surveillance footage from inside showed the city worker confronting a man in the store.
He responded that he was a retired veteran who took three bullets to the leg for his country. "I know that our customer base would love to see me say, 'Fire her, ' but I hate to see anybody lose their job".
"She gets in his face this close and says, 'You did nothing for this country, '" store employee Katie Klasse said. Watch the video here.
Right after the City of Jacksonville caught wind of the citation, its Chief of Staff Brian Hughes said it was reviewing the facts of the case, as well as current ordinances regarding flags and signs. COJ employees r expected to be respectful of our customers - you, the people of Jacksonville. On behalf of the City of Jacksonville I apologize to veterans and service members who are rightly troubled by the events that have been reported.
City officials are now investigating the allegations against inspector Melinda Power, and they say they will be reviewing that video.
Power later removed the Facebook post, but screenshots of it continue to be circulated on social media.
On Tuesday, the mayor announced that Power and her supervisor have been placed on administrative leave.
