Italian film-maker and Cannes Film Festival victor Vittorio Taviani has died aged 88, according to media reports on Sunday citing family sources. The former Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or victor and Berlin International Film Festival Golden Bear recipient passed away after a long illness, according to his daughter.
"Vittorio Taviani's death is a awful loss for Italian cinema and culture", President Sergio Mattarella said in a statement, praising the "unforgettable masterpieces" that he made with his younger brother. At the time, Taviana said he and his brother wanted to remind audiences that "even an inmate, on whose head is a awful punishment, is, and remains, a man". Known collectively as the Taviani Brothers, they won Europe's top cinema prizes, including the Palme d'Or in 1977 for Padre Padrone, the true story of Gavino Ledda, the son of a Sardinian shepherd who escaped a violent childhood by educating himself. "It seemed right away to us a handsome story, a story to make", Tsuraviani once said.
The pair developed a unique working relationship, taking turns to direct individual scenes in their films and never interfering when the other was in charge. Their last film, in 2017, was titled "Una questione privata", or "A private matter", which was credited to both but directed by Paolo alone due to Vittorio's health, according to Corriere della Sera.
They also produced together "The Lark Farm" (2007), a film telling about the Armenian Genocide.
Born in the Tuscan town of San Miniato, Vittorio and Paolo Taviani soon moved to nearby Pisa where as high-school students they became aspiring directors.
