IRS to push tax deadline back a day after glitch

Tax Deadline Day

"The feds are giving until today and that means you can file an extension today", says tax accountant and attorney, Paul Mancinone.

The website has been down most of the day and wasn't operational as of 4:30 p.m. EDT.

The agency said Tuesday that the cause was likely a hardware issue.

An alert message pops up when users select "Bank Account (Direct Pay)" on the agency's website; it says the service is now unavailable.

"Taxpayers do not need to do anything to receive this extra time", it said in a statement.

Payment by credit or debit card is still available, but there are fees ranging between $2 and $3.95 for that option.

Next important fact to know is if you do decide to get your taxes done by a professional, make sure they are in fact certified to handle your tax dollars. The IRS had a similar problem two years ago.

Surprise! You have an extra day to file your tax returns! Ironically, the technical issues prove the site is not living up to the hype.

The part of the network that allows taxpayers to pay their taxes in installments was also affected, but it has since been restored.

A separate page noted that the so-called Modernized e-File system, which accepts returns electronically was also down. "We will hold returns until the IRS is ready to begin accepting them again". "Tax preparers will need to print out the returns", Chen said. Issues developed Tuesday morning, according to an IRS news release.

The Internal Revenue Service had computer system issues develop Tuesday, and the end result was the IRS had to extend the filing deadline by one day. The Associated Press is reporting that the IRS has extended the tax-filing deadline for all filers to midnight Wednesday, April 18, due to glitch with agency's website. In October 2017, Congress received a warning that a failure of this magnitude could happen at any time, and today is the day it finally occurred.

In an address to lawmakers Tuesday morning, IRS Acting Commissioner David Kautter shed more light on the issue. It does say filers could still send their tax information electronically through their software providers and Free File.
