Investigation launched after cleaner finds needles inside Commonwealth Games Athletes Village

Officials also said the Commonwealth Games Federation court would hold a hearing into a breach of its No Needle Policy on Tuesday, but declined to identify the country involved.

The 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games slated to start April 5 has been caught up in a storm after "discarded needles" were found at the Games Village.

"Some syringes found were found in the athletes' village and we are continuing to investigate the nature of why those syringes were found and if anything is behind this", he said.

Prior to the CGF meeting here, there was a feeling that the Indian contingent could be in trouble amid reports that its boxers possessed syringes in violation of the event's "no needle policy".

"The Commonwealth has stood for generations now for fighting for fairness and freedom", said David Grevemberg, chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation.

Grevemberg said reports Indian athletes had been placed on a curfew was news to him and as far as he was aware the curfew hadn't been imposed by the CGF. However it was still unclear who they belonged to.

Indian manager Ajay Narang denied any team links to the syringes, saying they were found in a water bottle on an outside path.

"The syringes were not found in Indian athletes rooms".

Part of the most dominant rowing combination in the world with Eric Murray, Bond won two Olympic gold medals in the pairs before they split after the Rio Games.

Mr Nieva said his boxers had undergone doping tests since the syringes were discovered and his team now understood the strictness of the no-needles policy.

Edwards told the BBC that he has made "countless" personal calls to the IAAF to try and gain permission to compete for Nigeria.

Questions have been asked about the standing and modern appeal of the tournament, an echo of colonialism which began as the British Empire Games in 1930. "Its pre-Games testing and it has nothing to do with this incident", the official insisted.

"We're going to work as expediently as possible, within the rights of our standard", Grevemberg said in a statement.

The worldwide athletic event runs April 4-10 on the Golden Coast in Queensland, Australia.
