Indian Court Finds Bollywood Actor Salman Khan Guilty of Poaching

Saif Ali Khan Tabu Sonali Bendre and Neelam also reached Jodhpur

Jodhpur: While sentencing Salman Khan to five years in jail in the 1998 Blackbuck poaching case, the judge pointed out the fan following of the superstar, saying he is a "popular actor whose deeds are followed by people". Khan, who was taken into custody Thursday, was also fined 10,000 Indian rupees ($154).

Khan has long maintained that he was framed by forest officials in the case, while public prosecutors argued that Salman Khan, now 52, and the four others accused, had fled from the spot without taking along the dead animals when the locals spotted them.

The incident happened in the village of Kankani, near Jodhpur, in western India, when the cast had gathered to shoot Indian family drama "Hum Saath Saath Hain".

The defence had also argued the pellets recovered from Salman Khan did not corroborate the story of the prosecution.

Khan's lawyer could not be reached for comment and it was not immediately clear if the actor would seek bail. The Jodhpur court acquitted co-accused Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Neelam and Tabu due to lack of strong evidence against them.

Earlier, Khan entered the court complex wearing a black shirt and sporting sunglasses.

"They are praying for probation, they are emphasising on the minimum sentence", Bishnoi told reporters outside the court.

Meanwhile, I would like to ask one question- Why is it that those a cattle trader Pehlu Khan in the name of cow are patronised by the same Rajasthan government that claims all are equal under the law?
