Hudson Valley gets failing grades on air quality

North Carolina Air Pollution

Seilback said overall, this report shows nationally, air quality has gotten better and continues to improve.

The American Lung Association released its "state of the air" report today and it didn't bode well for Sacramento. Chico is ranked 21.

The state has seen a slight cut in ozone pollution, compared to last year's report; and that seven cities - Little Rock, Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers, Fort Smith, Hot Springs and Malvern - were on the list for the cleanest cities for short-term particle pollution.

"We are improving air quality, but the impacts of climate change are interfering with progress", said Bonnie Holmes-Gen, Senior Director, Air Quality and Climate Change, American Lung Association in California. New York City and Westchester received "F" grades, with ozone alert days well into the double digits.

Federal law requires the EPA to administer the program in question, the National Ambient Air Quality Standards, using best available science without considering the cost to industry.

That same Modesto area measured fifth in short-term particulate pollution, and sixth in year-round particulate pollution while the Stockton area that was surveyed was sixth in short-term particle pollution and 10th in long-term particle pollution. Up until last year's "State of the Air" report, Toledo's county had always gotten an F - as seven OH counties continued to do last year, including the counties for Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Canton.

Particle pollution, known as soot, comes from diesel engines, wood-burning stoves and fireplaces, and is exacerbated by wildfires.

"This report documents how warmer temperatures brought by climate change make ozone more likely to form and harder to clean up", the lung association said in a statement.

The grades are based on ozone levels and pollution, so the air you breathe may put your health at risk.

"We certainly applaud the progress made in the USA and in Southwestern Pennsylvania with respect to air pollution in the past", Stewart said.

Dutchess County saw eight days where the ozone level was at an orange alert. The Health Effects Institute (HEI) this week also released its State of Global Air report, which found 95% of the global population lives in areas where outdoor fine particulate matter concentration exceeds the World Health Organization's air quality guideline.

Elsewhere, the most polluted cities for ozone include Long Beach in the Los Angeles area at number one, Bakersfield at number two and rounding out the top three are Visalia, Porterville and Hanford in the San Joaquin Valley.
