Hand look at extensive flood damage, rescue efforts on Kauai

Severe rainfall strands dozens, mostly tourists, at Hawaii evacuation shelter

Miraculously, as of now, no deaths or injuries related to the storm have been reported.

Officials were warning people who wanted to be evacuated that it's not known when they can return because of landslides blocking Kuhio Highway on the island's north shore. State parks officials were coordinating with county and state emergency workers about prioritizing rescue missions.

The National Weather Service Honolulu said in a statement that 28.15 inches of rainfall was recorded from Hanalei, Kauai, through Saturday and early Sunday morning when the gauge stopped recording. At least two homes were destroyed, with dozens of others damaged from flooding. By mid-morning, Hawaii News Now reported that there had been 15-20 rescues.

Kauai County spokeswoman, Sarah Blane, reported that 212 people were airlifted from the Hawaiian island of Kauai - a lot of them were visitors.

Blane says efforts to move people stranded in an elementary school shelter are temporarily hampered by a landslide.

Meredith Zietz, who was still trapped in her Hanalei home Monday, posted video of a skittish bison as it dashed through her waterlogged yard.

Nearby in Haena, James Hennessy maneuvered his flooded, murky street on a standup paddleboard to check on neighbors.

Kauai's flooding is also causing major road closures across the island. The town of Hanalei received 28.15 inches of rain over a 24-hour period, which is just shy of the town's 28.54 inches over 24 hours back in 2012. She said rescuers will continue rescue operations throughout the day as the weather allows.

Multi-agency relief efforts are continuing today for residents and visitors stranded in Ha'ena and Wainiha as the National Guard, U.S. Coast Guard, Kauai Fire Department, Kauai Police Department and the American Red Cross work together to bring water and supplies into Wainiha and Ha'ena.
