Gregg Popovich: Spurs 'Looked Like Deer In The Headlights' Against Warriors

Needless to say, Popovich's Spurs need to be better.

The outcome of the game wasn't really surprising but the manner of the victory certainly was as the shorthanded Spurs struggled to cope with the intensity of the Oakland-based outfit.

The Spurs head coach has made it known that he's not all that interested in answering questions in between quarters or after games.

It's freakish we're holding players to a higher standard than coaches, and I hope this changes. "He's got, obviously, a lot of length, shot-blocking ability, mobility, I like his speed, so he was great, and there's no reason to take him out".

From the opening tip Saturday Golden State played with energy on defense, moved the ball on offense, and exploited their considerable athleticism advantage over San Antonio. San Antonio simply could not stop Durant and star shooting guard Klay Thompson, who combined for 51 of Golden State's 113 points on the afternoon. But the Spurs couldn't find any rhythm offensively, hitting just 32 of 80 field goals for a low 40 percent rate. "They did what they're supposed to do, which is protect home court". I think we came out not mentally prepared.

By starting Iguodala, Kerr showcased a veteran group that exuded incredible energy on both ends to begin the game. They challenge the shots better, and LaMarcus is, I think, the best low post scorer now that we have in the game, and he's a tremendous shooter.

"The first quarter, we looked like deer in the headlights, very disappointing", Popovich said after the game. Popovich said. "Just because you got your ass kicked tonight doesn't mean you can't have a sense of humor".

The Texas-based franchise was swept by Golden State in the Western Conference Finals a year ago and they're in danger of suffering the same fate this time in the first round.

Game 2 of this best-of-seven series will start at 7:30 p.m. PT on Monday night as the Spurs will look towards somehow evening up the series before it shifts back to San Antonio.
