Four elephants die after train accident
Jharsuguda: At least four wild elephants were killed after being hit by a train while crossing the railway track near Teladiha level crossing under Bagdihi Forest Range in the district on Monday. "Besides, they were also requested to follow guidelines including making continuous hooting along the stretch", Sushant Kumar, the divisional forest officer of Jharsuguda territorial division, told the publication.
The mishap took place early in the morning while the elephant herd was trying the cross over the railway track in search of food.
Train movement was reportedly stalled for a few hours as forest officials tried to remove the bodies with the help of cranes.
The incident caused disruption in the movement of trains in the section that comes under South-Eastern Railway.
According to reports, a herd of elephants was hit by a freight train while the pachyderms were crossing railway tracks around 4 am, resulting in death of four elephants including one tusker.
The elephants were from Bagdihi forest range under the Jharsuguda Forest division. In Odisha, over 15 elephants have been killed by speeding trains since 2010.
