Folau escapes sanctions after offering to quit Wallabies over controversial comments

Israel Folau is prepared to 'walk away' from rugby union over beliefs

NSW Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson concedes Israel Folau's playing future remains up in the air after the Wallabies fullback doubled down on his controversial comments on homosexuality.

Weber is one of the first high-profile players to air his grievances over Folau's comments on homosexuals, after the Wallaby said they were going to "HELL... unless they repent of their sins and turn to God".

"After we'd all talked, I told Raelene if she felt the situation had become untenable - that I was hurting Rugby Australia, its sponsors and the Australian rugby community to such a degree that things couldn't be worked through - I would walk away from my contract, immediately", Folau wrote.

"There have been rugby offers from the UK, Europe and Japan that are way above anything I could earn in Australia".

Folau said he has "no phobia towards anyone" but refused to back down on his beliefs, revealing he told Castle he would quit rugby if those beliefs were harming the game.

Weber took to Twitter over the issue and said "Kinda sick of us players staying quiet on some of this stuff".

"I think of it this way: you see someone who is about to walk into a hole and have the chance to save him".

His comments were described as "very disappointing" by Qantas airlines, a major sponsor of Rugby Australia, while global referee Nigel Owens, who came out as gay in 2007, said such comments could contribute to young people taking their own lives. "He's made that really clear and he made it really clear where they came from and why those beliefs are so dear to him and why he's articulating them". Castle responded by saying she was satisfied with the "respectful" way he clarified his remarks.

The rugby star revealed on Players Voice on Monday night he never meant to hurt anyone with his Instagram comment, but he could never shy away from who he is.

"I hope this will provide some context to the discussion that started with my reply to a question asked of me on Instagram two weeks ago".

"Certainly we've never held anyone from expressing their point of view".

"I haven't had an opportunity to talk to the team but certainly it's something in the future that I want to do".

"I love rugby union". "If he could do that for the next few years that'd be fantastic because I know I'm here for a long time, so hopefully he is too".

"My response to the question is what I believe God's plan is for all sinners, according to my understanding of my Bible teachings, specifically 1 Corinthians 6: 9-10: 'Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?"
