Fellow Democrats tell embattled Congresswoman Esty to resign

U.S. Representative Elizabeth Esty

Connecticut Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty on Monday called for an ethics review into her own handling of misconduct allegations against her former chief of staff, multiple outlets are reporting.

In a Facebook post, she said, "it is in the best interest of my constituents and my family to end my time in Congress at the end of this year and not seek re-election". "Unfortunately, through the review process I learned that threat of violence was not an isolated incident, but part of a pattern of behavior that victimized numerous women on my staff". "In the bad situation in my office, I could have and should have done better", she wrote.

"To the survivor, I want to express my strongest apology for letting you down".

Esty did not dismiss her top adviser, Tony Baker, for three months after she learned that he had punched and threatened to kill Anna Kain, a former staffer in her office who he had dated. Pelosi stopped short of calling on the congresswoman to resign. This source close to the congresswoman described those discussions as being overall positive conversations, speaking with members of the Democratic leadership, updating them on things from her vantage point. An open-seat election in this district isn't a lock for Democrats, but Esty insisted on running again the party might have seriously anxious about holding the seat even in a year that's shaping up to be a good one for the party. The National Republican Congressional Committee said it would look to the district as a prime pickup opportunity this fall.

The move by Esty to not seek reelection comes after various CT politicians called on her to resign. She acknowledged that she did not adequately protect Kain, has vowed to "do better" and has apologized but says she would not resign.

That process revealed that the "threat of violence was not an isolated incident, but part of a pattern of behavior that victimized numerous women" on her staff, she said.

News 8 has been told that Congresswoman Esty has been calling around to Democratic Town Committee chairs in the 5th district to measure their support and it does not seem to be going well. "It certainly was far from a ideal process - and I would appreciate their advice, counsel, and review".

Esty entered into a nondisclosure agreement with Baker and wrote a reference letter for him even after learning of the allegations, CNN has confirmed.

"In seeking this inquiry, I want to clarify whether there was any wrongdoing on my part", the statement continued.

Esty has personally reimbursed the U.S. Treasury for the $5,000 in severance, the Connecticut Post reported.
