Desiree Linden 1st American Woman to Win Boston Marathon Since 1985

Perhaps Linden's experience with inclement weather in MI helped give her a leg up with the rain, wind and cold in Boston Monday.

Flanagan seemed very enthusiastic and confident a few days before the race. The U.S. athlete was hoping to finally "make peace" with the Boston Marathon, which she was forced to forfeit a year ago due to a bone fracture in her lower back.

"I'm trying to have my best Boston race ever", Flanagan said in a statement.

Even with the short delay, Linden was able to get back on track, and wound up completing the course four minute faster than her nearest competitor.

Desiree Linden celebrates after winning the women's division of the 122nd Boston Marathon on Monday.

"I nearly feel like I have to pretend like I don't want to win it in order to do well", she said.

"So it's a reverse psychology for sure, because this is home".

The brutal conditions caused this to be the slowest women's race since 1978.

Linden saw Flanagan making an emergency break (the athlete darted into a portable toilet) and made a decision to slow down and make sure her friend and competitor was alright.

Rather than racing on with the group, Linden chose to hang back with Flanagan and help her make up the lost time and rejoin the main pack.

It might not have been the dream finish that Shalane Flanagan foresaw for herself, but it ended up being one that she predicted for her friend.

Desiree Linden splashed her way through icy rain and a near-gale headwind to a Boston Marathon victory on Monday, the first American woman to win the race since 1985.

Linden is the first American woman to win the race since Lisa Larsen Weidenbach claimed first place in 1985.

"I don't have the right words", Linden told reporters.

"It's storybook", the victor of the 2018 Boston Marathon added.

2 hours, 39 minutes and 54 seconds - was the slowest winning time since 1978, that only spoke to the hard conditions runners faced through the 26.2 mile course, battered by a tough wind and cold rain that kept the pace relatively slow.

In 2011, Linden finished second at Boston by just two seconds. The top 15 winners on the men's and women's sides will also receive financial prizes, with second-place finishers winning $75,000 and third-place finishers winning $40,000 each.

USA athletes fared equally well in the men's race, notes the Washington Post.
