Crash closes Hwy. 400 in Barrie

As if the icy conditions weren't enough for motorists this morning, drivers in the Barrie-area faced the closure of Highway 400 in both directions between Mapleview Drive and Innisfil Beach Road.

The clean-up continues at the scene.

The northbound lanes are expected to open before southbound lanes, but no timeline has been given. A new guardrail also has to be installed.

"He told me that he lost control as he went into the slush in the left lane as he was passing a snow plow", Schmidt said.

Kerry Schmidt said one tractor-trailer ended up in the ditch while another crashed into the guardrail.

Schmidt said it will be a dicey morning for many commuters.

A concrete wall was being brought to the scene to replace the damaged metal guardrail.

Heavy equipment is on the scene to remove the southbound truck from down an embankment.

The crash resulted in a diesel spill and crews are continuing to clean up the highway.

Police say only minor injuries are reported.

Schmidt said he spoke to the driver, who has since been charged with careless driving.
