Border Patrol union endorses Ted Cruz for Senate

Ted Cruz's Opponent Raised Eye-Popping $6.7M In Last Three Months

Excitement over O'Rourke's candidacy has been bubbling just below the surface for Democrats in Texas and Washington for a few months now, with optimism built, largely, on O'Rourke's fundraising ability and President Donald Trump's surprisingly unimpressive poll numbers in the Lone Star State.

Perhaps equally staggering is the source of O'Rourke's haul: He said he received more than 141,000 separate contributions averaging less than $50 per contribution.

That sum dwarfs his already-impressive earlier fundraising quarters, and puts him in a position to be able to go t0e-to-toe with Cruz financially in the expensive state, even if outside Democratic groups decide to spend elsewhere this fall.

"No PACs, no special interests". "More than 141,000 grassroots contributions".

O'Rourke's fundraising performance has little recent historical precedent.

Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Beto O'Rourke tosses a supporter a package of Girl Scout cookies as thanks for a question at a rally at Old Texas Brewing Company in Burleson on February 24. O'Rourke's previous quarters ranged from $1.7 million to $2.4 million. O'Rourke's campaign declined to provide how much cash the candidate has on hand, but said O'Rourke has outraised Cruz cumulatively.

President Donald Trump won Texas by 9 points and almost a million votes in 2016 over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.

Senator Ted Cruz will be in Midland Wednesday, April 3, 2018.

Those primary numbers indicated O'Rourke and other Democrats may not be as ready to compete statewide in Texas as they'd hoped - roughly twice as many voters turned out to vote for Cruz in his noncompetitive primary race as for O'Rourke, who won less than two thirds of the Democratic primary vote against a pair of no-name challengers. Clinton carried the district by 41 points in 2016, and Inside Elections rates it Solid Democratic.
