Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party reportedly plans to approach the Election Commission to lodge a complaint against the Congress for allegedly "attempting to incite violence" against Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath.
The statements made by Dinesh Gundu Rao will only jeopardise the chances of Congress's victory further in the constituency.
Speaking at an event organised by Congress in Bengaluru to protest against Unnao and Kathua rape cases, Rao said that Adityanath is unfit to be a chief minister, according to a Deccan Herald report. "Had you used the same language to speak about a Muslim cleric, your wife would have done to you what you asked the people to do to Yogi Adityanath", MP Pratap Simha said. A victim of rape found no justice, she lost her father due to inhuman treatment by UP Govt and the CM who calls himself Yogi was trying to protect the accused BJP MLA. He said, "Mr Rao has insulted our community (Nath community of Yogi Adithyanath) by making such a statement". He had also demanded the PM Narendra Modi to sack UP CM Yogi. The BJP is out on the streets over Rao's remark, and even demanded an apology from Congress president Rahul Gandhi.
DNA quoted Rao as saying that Adityanath was a "disgrace to Indian politics" and that if he had any "decency he should resign". Utter disrespect to a CM and a revered Natha family saint. I, however, regret the kind of words I used for him (UP CM). Gundu Rao's statements have infuriated the community since the Natha followers have a deeper connection with the Adichunchungiri mutt of the Vokkaligas. "This is an emotional & sensitive issue for me", Gundu Rao told news agency ANI.
BJP spokesperson S Prakash wanted Gundu Rao to be arrested and it is against violation of election code and conduct.
