I know that the San Francisco 49ers talked to Eric Reid about re-signing him but early in the process, they wanted to do a one-year deal with him because they've got some younger guys or might look to draft a safety so they couldn't make a long-term commitment.
However, on Monday, the Cincinnati Bengals invited Reid to their complex for a visit, the first of his free agency period.
Reid, 26, said last season he wouldn't be surprised if his protest impacted his pending free agency.
Reid has indicated he believes his decision to take a knee during the national anthem to protest racial inequality has scared teams away this offseason.
In fact, Niner Noise broke down why it would have been feasible for the 49ers to use the franchise tag on Reid this season. My faith in God is the reason. "I'm just going to stay positive, keep trying to stay in shape, and wait to see what happens".
Kaepernick spent previous year out of football after no team offered him a contract and while it's still believed Reid will find a job at some point this off-season, he believes the owners are holding up his eventual signing, not the general managers. Upon returning to the lineup, Jaquiski Tartt had already taken over Reid's role. Over his five-year National Football League career, Reid has 70 game appearances, started all but one of those games, registered 318 combined tackles, 10 interceptions, a sack, 34 passes defensed, and two forced fumbles. Reid spent his first four years with the 49ers as a free safety.
Reid has continuously stated he doesn't regret his stance. This would be another hole that is filled allowing them to focus on bigger needs in the draft and fewer holes mean less picks needed, which allows the team better opportunities to bundle picks to move up in the draft.
