Bartolo Colon Loses Perfect Game In Eighth Inning

Gerrit Cole

Bartolo Colon carried a flawless game into the eighth inning and Robinson Chirinos drove in all three runs for the Texas Rangers.

Colon still had the no-hitter intact, but lost it on the next batter when Josh Reddick doubled down the right field line. Still, Colon (44 years old) is the oldest pitcher to have a no-hitter in the eighth inning, according to the Dallas Morning News' Evan Grant.

Colon struck out seven and gave up one earned run through 7.2 innings.

Colon was pulled two outs later after giving up a SAC fly to lose his shutout as well. Despite Colon being a fan favorite in Flushing, the Mets didn't consider bringing Big Sexy back to Citi Field.

Going into the eighth, Texas led 1-0 on a home run by Robinson Chirinos off Astros ace Justin Verlander in the third, the only hit of the game to that point.

Keone Kela (2-0) tossed a scoreless ninth for the win. He struck out seven and ended up with a no-decision.

On his way from the mound to the dugout, the good-humored Colon gestured toward Reddick at third base with a quick flick of his hand.

Colon threw 96 pitches, 66 for strikes, and kept the powerful Astros off balance by changing speeds and working expertly to both edges of the plate.

Prior to Sunday, Colon's longest no-hit bid throughout his 21-year career came with the Indians on September 18, 2000, when he held the Yankees hitless for 7.1 innings.

Kenny Rogers threw Texas' most recent no-hitter, in July 1994. It was the third time in four starts this season he has lasted at least seven innings.

Wilmer Flores hit a game-winning home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and NY beat Milwaukee to improve the best start in team history to 12-2. Keuchel has never opened 0-3. Oakland avoided a series sweep as Manaea (2-2) gave up just two hits and struck out four.
