Alonso hopes McLaren produces Toro Rosso step

Alonso is under no illusion that McLaren's level of performance is not where the team expected it to be at the outset of 2018.

"We were still lacking a bit of pace in the race to be with [Nico] Hulkenberg and to attack the Haas".

"We need to raise our game because it's not enough at the moment", he told Sky F1. "A pretty hard weekend saved by the bell at the last moment with two cars in the points and with good points for the team, but we know we have to improve because today was a bit of a coincidence". "We were too slow in qualifying and need to improve that because when we start behind we compromise our race result". We know the auto has some good things, some bad things. "We know that we have the potential, and that the auto has some good things and bad things which we need to make sure we improve as soon as possible".

The four-time ex champion just held on to win a dramatic Bahrain Grand Prix from pole position on Sunday and extended his championship lead over Lewis Hamilton, who finished third behind teammate Valtteri Bottas despite starting from ninth.

"We need to make sure we improve the bad things as soon as possible". With the more reliable parts fitted and an aerodynamic upgrade on the vehicle, Toro Rosso was much more competitive in Bahrain and Gasly started from fifth on the grid, finishing fourth after a hugely impressive drive.

With 22 points on the board, McLaren are just eight shy of what they managed to score the whole of the 2017 season.

"For me it was an fantastic race and I enjoyed some great fighting, so I'm pretty happy".

"From there we made a great recovery, and to finish eighth and have both cars in the points again is very pleasing".

"The team did a good job with the strategy, the pit stops and reliability, we got the points, good points". Fifth in Australia, seventh here.

"But I think that in terms of championship we'll be ahead of them".

"Whatever we have in our vehicle on Sunday here on the track, we will deliver and push to the limits".
