A Navy F-18 fighter jet crashed in the water near a naval station in Key West, Florida, Wednesday afternoon, the Navy says.
Officials say both the pilot and the weapons systems specialist were taken to the hospital after they ejected from the jet, but couldn't confirm their status.
Witnesses said it appeared the plane had some sort of explosion in the air. "Then it went a little sideways, then I saw fire, and then it just literally dropped out of the sky", Wilson told Local News 10.
The jet crashed during a training mission near Naval Air Station Key West, a military facility that houses air-to-air combat fighter aircraft.
ABC News reported that a spokesperson said one pilot ejected but it was "unclear whether the pilot was over land or water".
The US Nvay is yet to release any information about pilots, whose condition is unknown.
