Tour looks to Tiger to help revive Presidents Cup

Tiger Woods

South African Ernie Els will be captain of the global team for next year's Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia, a source told Reuters on Monday. "We're going to see that [2003] tape 4 billion times".

Also the announcement of Woods as the 2022 USA Captain will be a huge boost to the Presidents Cup that has suffered for many years given the USA side has won 10 of 12 events since the inaugural tournament in 1994.

The 2019 Presidents Cup will be the 13th match in the competition's history.

Many golf observers think that the Presidents Cup, unlike its biennial big brother, the Ryder Cup, needs an adrenalin infusion.

It prompted four-time major victor Els, an assistant captain to Nick Price in NY, to call for sweeping changes ahead of the showpiece in Melbourne. The Presidents Cup has been reduced to 30 matches over four days, and the format is not likely to change for the next one.

Woods' recent strong form could see him qualify for the 12-man USA team, becoming the first playing captain in the event's history. With the score tied at 17-17 after all the matches had been played, Tiger and Els were chosen to represent their respective teams in a playoff.

With Woods as the captain, has he given up any hope of making the team on his own merit?

For the first time in what feels like forever, the 14-time major champion was back in contention on a Sunday, coming up just short in his bid to win his 80th PGA Tour event over the weekend at the Valspar Championship.

Els, and a victor of four Majors, made his Presidents Cup debut in 1996 and was a member of the only global winning side two years later, and all up, has contested eight Presidents Cups with the last being in 2013. The late Arnold Palmer was the most recent player-captain in the Ryder Cup, in 1963, when he went 4-2-0 in a 23-9 American victory at East Lake in Atlanta.

"I keep getting just a little bit better and a little bit sharper", Woods said, per CNN.
