Slovak Prime Minister Ready to Leave Office Amid Protests Over Killed Journalist

Slovakian PM offers to resign to resolve crisis triggered by murder of journalist

Slovakia's prime minister says he's ready to resign as a way out of the political crisis triggered by the slayings of an investigative journalist and his fiancee.

The couple were found dead last month.

"Today I have offered my resignation to the president of the republic", Fico said. "If the president agrees with it, I am ready to file a resignation letter tomorrow", Fico added.

Interior Minister Robert Kalinak resigned two days ago, bowing to pressure from a coalition partner, the Most-Hid party.

Last week, the Slovak president accused the cabinet of insufficient efforts to settle the domestic crisis and called for a re-shuffle of the government or snap parliamentary elections.

The killings have gripped Slovakia, leading to calls for an investigation and the largest antigovernment protests in Bratislava since the fall of communism in 1989. Kuciak was working on a story linking businessmen operating in the country with the Italian Mafia before his death. "It is important that the current government coalition preserves its mandate that it has received from the voters", Fico said on Wednesday at a press conference.

The proposal, agreed by the leaders of his three-party ruling coalition, quashed an ultimatum by the smallest member to push for early elections following outcry over the killing of an journalist who was investigating state corruption.
