Sheriff: No prior reports on vet home shooter

Victim of veterans home shooting fondly remembered by Dedham friend

The Army veteran who killed three women after a siege in California had long dreamed of serving his country in the military, but his skill as a marksman led to unsafe missions in Afghanistan that left him anxious and wary when he came back home, according to people who knew him.

It appears one of the dead individuals was the gunman, who killed himself, law enforcement officials said.

Loeber had been hired to direct the Pathway Home in 2016, the program's website says, as it was transitioning from a group that focused primarily on housing and treating veterans with PTSD into a program with a wider mission, including helping vets with academic and career development.

"These fearless women were accomplished professionals who dedicated their careers to serving our nation's veterans, working closely with those in the greatest need of attention after deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan", the statement from Pathway Home read. The U.S. Army has declined to provide more details beyond Wong's basic service record, which shows he served in Afghanistan from April 2011 to March 2012 and received numerous awards.

Meanwhile, a California agency revealed Wong lost his state licenses to be an armed security guard for failing to pay the fees.

Albert Cheung Wong was a state licensed security guard and was able to carry a gun for almost a decade.

Wong's Facebook page, which was taken down shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Friday night showed he was a fan of competition shooters. A bomb-sniffing dog alerted authorities to something on the vehicle but the only thing found was a cellphone, authorities said.

The Napa County Sheriff's Department issued an alert to residents at 10.30am warning them to avoid the area.

Childs could not confirm whether the hostages were chosen at random or were targeted. 42-year-old Jennifer Golick, a staff pathologist at The Pathway Home, was one of the deceased victims.

Golick was a clinical director from St. Helena. "There were many bullets fired".

"Despite being unarmed, they are tasked with the responsibility of protecting a very large campus of residents, staff, and visitors 24 hours a day, and local law enforcement relies on these public safety officers as the front-line security for the hospital", the statement read.

Authorities have so far been tight-lipped about why a former Army rifleman might have killed three women at a Northern California veterans home.

"There should be a gate guard", Thomas said.

Police have evacuated the property, though some people were still trapped inside. "We've complained for years here, and the people at CalVet in Sacramento don't seem to be willing to do any of that".

"It was clear that he was there to do some harm", said an organization volunteer and spokesman Larry Kamer, whose wife, Devereaux Smith, was present at the party but managed to escape unharmed. The two other victims have been identified as 48-year-old Christine Loeber and 32-year-old Jennifer Gonzales.

"She was a beloved mom, sister, daughter, colleague and friend". There's obviously no firearms allowed in that building. "She is missed terribly", said her husband.

Police said a Napa Valley sheriff's deputy exchanged gunshots with Wong but nothing was heard from him after that. Friends are also reflecting on the lives of three dedicated mental health professionals. "We just feed everybody", she said.

The nearby Heroes Tavern and Cafe, where veterans from the facility were eating breakfast when the shooting started, was put on lockdown.

"Whatever happened out there, he didn't say he was going to shoot anybody", said Wong's brother, Tyrone Lampkin.

"She's holding up. I get anxious about her", Dugan said.

"I was raised in this area, and this has always been a quiet area".

"I don't know and I imagine that no one can speak on his treatment", Kamer said.
