The report also lists Charlotte native and National Basketball Association superstar Steph Curry and music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs as potential minority stake holders.
The report also noted that Rubin appears to be going up against Sherman Financial Group CEO Ben Navarro, as well as hedge fund billionaire David Tepper for the purchase.
Rubin isn't new to ventures into professional sports, as he owns stakes in the Philadelphia 76ers, the New Jersey Devils and in English Premier League team Crystal Palace.
Rubin's name was mentioned on Sunday as a serious bidder to purchase the team that Jerry Richardson put up for sale during an National Football League investigation into allegations of workplace misconduct. Shortly after Richardson's announcement to sell the team, Diddy expressed his desire to buy the team which then prompted Golden State Warriors All-Star Stephen Curry to say he wanted in as well.
Sean Combs tweeted in December that he would like to buy the Carolina Panthers after previous owner Jerry Richardson was forced to sell the team following sexual harassment allegations.
After the announcement that the team was for sale, Combs tweeted that he was interested in purchasing the team, which is estimated to be worth $2.3 billion. He later spoke to reporters about it.
"Obviously I have a day job, but I've got people that are plugged in and are trying to see how to make that happen", Curry, who was born in North Carolina and is a Panthers fan, was quoted as saying at the time. Curry, on the other hand, made $47.3 million in 2017, per Forbes. Any bid must be approved by two-thirds of the league's 32 owners, and the soonest that might happen is in May, per ESPN.
Multiple sources tell ESPN the earliest the team could be awarded would be at the next owners' meetings in May.
