Richard Sherman's NFL Career By the Numbers

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman talks to reporters during a post-game press conference following an NFL football game against the Houston Texans in Seattle. The Seahawks are cutting ties with star

Sherman cited "business decisions" as reason for the "Legion of Boom's" demise. What will the Seahawks do to replace him?

The San Francisco 49ers bolstered their secondary signing former rival cornerback Richard Sherman this past week.

Matt Breida figures to have a significant role after averaging 4.4 yards per carry - a higher clip than Hyde - but the 49ers do not know what they have in either Joe Williams, who spent his rookie year on injured reserve, or Jeremy McNichols.

When he was healthy, Sherman was essentially a one-man island on the left side of the Seahawks defence, often matching up and shutting down the opposing team's best receiver on the outside. Cornerback Aqib Talib reportedly did not want to play for the 49ers, who had almost completed a trade agreement with the Denver Broncos to acquire him.

The San Francisco 49ers are running dangerously close to becoming the NFL team that has the biggest off-season glow-up, but they'll have to outdo the Cleveland Browns who appear to be shaking up the entire league. Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but Sherman told ESPN's Josina Anderson on Saturday that the incentive-laden deal is worth up to $39.15 million. Sherman can cash in if he fulfills certain incentives, including passing a physical on the first day of training camp, playing at least 90 percent of 2018 snaps, making the 2019 Pro Bowl, and being named to the A.P. All-Pro team.

Although Sherman's effectiveness at getting a maximum contract may be questionable - his signing bonus with the 49ers was a mere $3 million - the money he saved by acting as his own agent may make up for what he wasn't able to get from San Francisco. He played at Stanford, so he's familiar with the area.

Shead tore his ACL in Seattle's playoff loss to the Falcons in 2017 and only played in two games a year ago.

Seattle has indicated an interest in bringing him back, but it looks like they will have some competition. Shead, a starter at right corner in 2016, could also be re-signed. So, if retribution is part of the motivation, Sherman can easily get it.

Mesh those traits with playing in Kyle Shanahan's complex offense, and Sherman was convinced this unit would be a force for years to come.

Numbers, of course, can be parsed a lot of different ways, especially in a sport with as few games as the NFL. Sherman missed the first game of his career in 2017 due to a season-ending Achilles injury. Saleh was a former defensive assistant with the Seahawks. One: The player has a awful season and is either done with the National Football League or signs another one-year contract close to the minimum.
