Police say that the report of a gunman in a residence hall at Northwestern University in suburban Chicago was a hoax. "Seek shelter if in the area".
Speaking with reporters, Evanston Police Department Commander Ryan Glew indicated that the alert was investigated after someone had called officials around 2:17 p.m. local time and reported that he had shot his girlfriend near the graduate hall.
A GUNMAN is loose on a university in the United States sparking a lockdown among staff and students, it has been reported.
Officers searched the area but "no evidence of a victim, scene, or gunman" was found, according to police.
The university has tweeted a series of warnings, with one saying: "NUPD responding to Evanston campus emergency".
Earlier Wednesday, Northwestern students staged a protest against gun violence, as part of the national walkout demonstrations in the wake of last month's Florida high school shooting.
About 3:40 p.m., the university updated their alert to say that that anyone in Englehart Hall should continue to remain behind locked doors, but that people outside the building no longer needed to shelter in place. "We're still treating this as an active investigation". Police originally heard a report of shots fired in the area of Emerson Street and Maple Avenue. No gun was found at the scene.
