Rajya Sabha polls: Congress wins 3 seats, BJP one in Karnataka

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah however termed the charge as'false, saying before casting their votes the two MLAs realised they had made a'mistake on the ballot paper so they took another one for which'there is a provision in law

Former Minister and Senior JD (S) leader M.C. Nanaiah who is upset over the party for being sidelined, will join the Congress in the presence of AICC President Rahul Gandhi at a public rally in Mysuru on March 25.

Meanwhile, one of the suspended JD (S) MLA Balakrishna, who had earlier in the day exprssed his willingnes to have talks on the disqualification issue with party leaders, has again written to the Speaker to re-hear them as the party on the one side has suspended the rebal MLAs from the party and on the other has given whip to cast votes to party candidate in the Rajya Sabha election.

Congress's Dr L Hanumanthaiah, Dr Syed Naseer Hussain and GC Chandrasekhar and BJP's Rajeev Chandrashekar were declared elected after a complaint by the JDS to the Election Commission caused delay in taking up counting of votes.

Congress candidate Chandrasekhar received 46 votes, Hanumanthaiah 44 and Hussain 42.

For BJP's Chandrashekar, the win takes him to the upper House of Parliament for the third consecutive term after completing two terms as an Independent from the southern state.

"Of the 188 votes polled, 184 were valid and four were declared invalid", Joint Electoral Officer K.N. Ramesh told IANS. But Congress chose to field three candidates from their party and now JD (S) has fielded BM Farooq. "The returning officer allowed them to vote again with fresh ballot papers in total violation of the rules", JDS leader H.D. Kumaraswamy said.

As the poll process was underway, Kumaraswamy claimed that two senior Congress MLAs had "cross voted" against their party's official nominees by marking for another candidate on the ballot paper. The errors were spotted by party agents, who directed them to vote with new ballot papers.

JD (S) Counsel Udaya Hola, appearing for JD (S) argued that the application was pending with the Speaker for disposal for the last two years and since election was slated for March 23, Verdict should be announced.

"After seeing the cross-voting the agent protested".

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah denied the charge and said the JD (S) was showing signs of desperation after failing to muster the numbers.
