Rajya Sabha polls: Congress plays caste card in its nominations from Karnataka

Bengaluru: Congress rules out support to JD(S), decides to contest third RS seat

In the 225-member state legislative assembly, including one nominated, the Congress has 122 legislators, BJP 48 and JD-S 37.

Nomination process for electing five Rajya Sabha members from Madhya Pradesh commenced on March 5 with the issuance of notification by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Gandhinagar: After the Rajya Sabha elections in Gujarat last August that turned into a prestige battle between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress, another fight is on the cards for the upper house elections scheduled for 23 March.

Voting is likely to be held on Mar 23.

Congress spokesman Shaktisinh Gohil, however, said Shukla was not going to file nomination and added that the party's candidates are Rathwa and Yagnik. While the BJP retained Rupala and Mandaviya, it dropped MP Shankarbhai Vegad and moved Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to Uttar Pradesh. Prakash Javdekar, Narayan Rane and V. Murlidharan are the BJP's official candidates while Ms Rahatkar, has also filed her nomination as BJP candidate on Monday. One of its leaders PK Valera has filed his nomination as an independent candidatewith the support of some CongressMLAs.

The fluid political situation in Bihar, where there was a possibility of a seventh candidate, seems to have helped Akhilesh.

Among the other names in the Congress list are senior journalist Kumar Ketkar from Maharashtra, as per the list approved by Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

Here too the arithmetic favours Congress, with the party hoping for support from seven rebel JDS MLAs, who are expected to join the party after the Rajya Sabha polls.

On the other hand, BSP, which has 19 MLAs, requires another eight votes along with the 10 Samajwadi Party legislators, to get its only candidate into the Rajya Sabha.

RJD candidates Manoj Jha and Ashfaq Karim filed their nomination in the presence of the party's national vice-president Rabri Devi, state president Ram Chandra Purve and national executive member Tej Pratap Yadav. "This might split the votes of Congress MLAs".
