Qld cyclone warning: Tropical Cyclone Linda forms

Queensland, Say G'day To Your New Mate: Tropical Cyclone Linda

The category one cyclone is about 850km north-east of Brisbane and is tracking towards the Queensland coast, but is not expected to make landfall.

"On Wednesday, it'll start to move down the coast, bringing risky surf conditions, large swells, possible high tides in the morning and strong to even gale-force winds", meteorologist Grace Legge, Bureau of Meteorology, said.

"The system will most likely shift to the southwest during today before taking on a more southerly track on Thursday and is expected to remain offshore of the southern Queensland coast".

It is not predicted to cross the coast.

Risky surf with waves up to four metres high are expected to lash the Queensland coastline as Tropical Cyclone Linda makes its way south.

"However, on Thursday morning, tides are likely to exceed the highest tide of the year, with inundation of low-lying areas possible on the high tide", they said.

The Bureau has set the chance of the system forming into a cyclone today at 20-50%.

"However, as we know from cyclones across all Queensland and we've done this hundreds of times, we have to keep looking at these every hour, on the hour, and sometimes they really surprise us and do the opposite".

"Tropical cyclone Linda is expected to transition to a subtropical low early today as it continues to move into a less favourable environment", the weather bureau said in a statement.

THE Bureau of Meteorology has issued urgent severe weather warnings for risky surf and strong winds for the Sunshine Coast and surrounding regions, with flooding of some low-lying areas.

Mr Crawford said Queensland had not been spared from wild weather in recent weeks.

"I urge boaties to postpone planned activities until the weather improves and even then, make sure you check before heading out and keep checking while on the water", he said.

"We're quite organised but because of the heavy rain in the last week we're already very bogged down in our backyard".
