President Trump replaces Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State with Mike Pompeo

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson speaks to the media during a joint press conference with Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs Monica Juma at a hotel in Nairobi Kenya Friday March

Trump: Rex Tillerson out as secretary of state, to be replaced by CIA Director Mike Pompeo. He added, "I want to thank Rex Tillerson for his service".

According to the Associated Press, Tillerson had returned from a shortened trip to Africa just hours before the announcement.

"I am proud to nominate the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Mike Pompeo, to be our new Secretary of State", Trump said.

Gina Haspel will take over as director of the CIA, Trump said.

The former ExxonMobil CEO's nomination as head of the State Department passed a Senate panel by a 11-10 party line vote January 23.

In 2010, Pompeo defeated State Senator Jean Schodorf for the Kansas Republican primary for the 4th District Congressional seat.

Gina Haspel, the deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency, is Trump's pick to take over for Pompeo. Haspel will be the first woman to serve in the position.

Tillerson also appeared out of the loop last week when Trump announced he would meet with North Korea's leader and become the first sitting US president to do so.

Tillerson came under scrutiny for his past business relationship with Russia President Vladimir Putin.
