President Trump Concedes Likely Delay on Infrastructure

Supporters rally for extension of DED for Liberians

President Donald Trump said Thursday that the US could hold back on a planned trade deal with South Korea as a negotiating tactic until after he attends a meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

The White House has said Mr Trump plans to meet Mr Kim by May amid nuclear tensions between the two nations.

"We're moving along very nicely with North Korea".

At another point, Trump suggested he may hold up the newly re-worked free trade agreement with South Korea until he reaches some kind of agreement on North Korea's nuclear weapons.

Trump is claiming Democrats don't want to work with him on infrastructure because they don't want to give him any additional "wins" after his tax bill passed in December.

There is little expectation that Congress will take up a sweeping infrastructure proposal along the lines of what Trump envisions - or that Republicans in control of the House and Senate will write their own legislation - as lawmakers begin to shift their focus to the challenge of getting re-elected in November.

Speaking at a union training site in Richfield, Ohio, Trump called on Congress to fund his proposal for $200 billion in spending, in hopes of triggering $1.5 trillion in infrastructure investment.

Trump acknowledged that it will be extremely hard to pass his $1.5 trillion investment plan requiring $200 billion in federal funds unless Democrats provide needed support.

Trump is also expected to tout his non-legislative efforts to reduce infrastructure-related regulation, notably shortening the federal permitting process.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., has said he is planning to address infrastructure "in about five or six different bills", rather than one big package.

President Trump, alongside Vice President Pence, speaks to the news media about the 2,232 page, $1.3 trillion spending bill, at the White House in Washington, March 23, 2018.

The speech at times took on the air of a Trump campaign rally, as the president bragged about his record while ignoring issues like Russian Federation or the claims of an affair by an adult film actress. "We look forward to sitting down with Kim Jong Un to talk about a better future for his people", Ms Nauert said in a tweet.

"It is also evidence that @POTUS' maximum pressure campaign is working". The president, first lady Melania Trump and their 12-year-old son, Barron, spent last weekend at their Palm Beach, Florida, estate.
