Periyar statue vandalised in Tamil Nadu's Pudukkottai

RSS BJP Signalled Their Cadres to Destroy Periyar Statues Rahul Gandhi

The latest attack on Periyar's statue is an extension of the repeated vandalism on effigies in several parts of the country post BJP-win in Tripura.

Chennai: A statue of Dravidian icon and social reformer EV Ramasamy, popularly known as Periyar, was vandalised by unidentified people in Tamil Nadu's Pudukkottai on Tuesday.

Earlier, two statues of Vladimir Lenin was demolished in Tripura - one razed by a mob at Sabroom Motor Stand in Agartala and another by a bulldozer at Belonia College Square in a Tripura town.

The vandalisation incident comes amid the ongoing Rama Rajya Rath Yatra in southern India, which entered Tamil Nadu on Monday.

Police said the head of the statue was found removed and kept beneath the statue, this morning.

The district authorities swung into action on hearing about the incident, carried out fix works and restored the statue to its original state by 8 am, they said.

A large contingent of police has been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident.

A case has been registered and an investigation is on in the matter, ANI reported.

The statue was installed near the Panchayat office in 2013.

Later, Bharatiya Janata Party's predecessor organization Bharatiya Jana Sangh's founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee's statue was also vandalised in Kolkata.
