Packers beat out Saints, Redskins for Muhammad Wilkerson

Wilkerson, who was released by the New York Jets earlier this month, will be reunited with new Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.

But Wilkerson had already visited Green Bay, and he was on his way to Washington.

Imagine a defensive line featuring Muhammad Wilkerson, Mike Daniels and Kenny Clark. Mike Pettine, the Packers' new defensive coordinator, was Wilkerson's defensive coordinator with NY when he was drafted in the first round in 2011. The deal is reportedly worth a maximum of $8 million, per NFL Network's Jason La Canfora.

NY officially released Wilkerson on February 28.

Wilkerson was released from the Jets prior to the beginning of free agency.

The Jets released Wilkerson on March 5, ending a seven-year run in NY that turned bitter last season.

After a 12-sack season with the Jets in 2015, Wilkerson signed an $86 million extension to stay in NY.

Head coach Todd Bowles made Wilkerson a healthy scratch in each of the final three games of the 2017 campaign.

That seemed to change, however, when he was signed to a five-year, $86 million contract extension before the 2016 campaign, according to Spotrac.

Wilkerson, 28, dealt with ankle and shoulder injuries while managing just eight sacks over the last two reasons.

Wilkerson visited with the team last week, and spent time with other National Football League organizations after that before making his decision to sign with Green Bay. If Pettine can keep Wilkerson motivated and maximize his unique ability as a long and powerful run-stopper and pass-rusher, it's possible Wilkerson could land another big deal.
