Notre Dame in contract discussions for home-and-home series with Alabama

Two powerhouse programs may take a different route.

Alabama and Notre Dame are discussing a home-and-home football series.

The Crimson Tide haven't played a true non-conference home-and-home series since 2011 against Penn State.

There's no indication as to when a Notre Dame-Alabama home-and-home series would take place, but the Fighting Irish schedule is pretty loaded in the next few years.

Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne would not confirm with The Tuscaloosa News that the two schools were negotiating a series, but did say Alabama was "exploring some home-and-homes".

During the Saban era, Alabama is a flawless 8-0 in those neutral site games against Power 5 opponents with the most recent being the 24-7 victory over Florida State in Week 1 of the 2017 season.

In the first two races Sunday - the first and second varsity eight - Notre Dame was neck and neck with Minnesota and Louisville, but fell to the Golden Gophers and Cardinals in both events.

The Crimson Tide's other non-conference games come against Arkansas State, Louisiana and The Citadel. The teams have previously played seven times dating back to 1973, with Notre Dame claiming five victories.

Texas will play the second half of home-and-home agreements with Maryland and USC in 2018 and also has future home-and-homes with LSU (2019 and 2020), Ohio State (2022 and 2023) and MI (2024 and 2026). More-so for its non-conference schedule, as we all know what kind of gauntlet lays before teams in the SEC when they begin conference play.
