Nepal votes in presidential election


The electoral college for presidential election included 880 voters including 331 lawmakers of the federal parliament and 549 of the provincial assemblies.

So Shakya opposed Oli's decision to repeat Bhandari as President, but she was eventually shut up by a majority of the UML Standing Committee members loyal to the party Chair.

Bhandari is facing Nepali Congress leader Kumari Laxmi Rai for the post of head of state.

As Nepal is at the polls to elect a new President for the country, incumbent President Bidhya Devi Bhandari looks poised to win a second term.

The Left alliance candidate won the vote with more than a two-thirds majority.

The voting had begun from 10:00 am and went on till 3:00 pm today.

Bhandari was backed by the two ruling parties Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist Leninist) and Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre).

Nepal held elections for its national parliament and provincial assemblies in November and December previous year.

CPN-UML leader Bhandari was elected the first woman president of Nepal on October 28, 2015. However, the vote weightage of the lawmakers from the adjacent parliaments is different.

The Rastriya Janata Party- Nepal and the Federal Socialist Forum- Nepal are expected to vote in favour of Bhandari, who also set the record as the first female president of Nepal.

Out of the 334 federal parliament members, 326 members cast their votes in the election. She also did not endorse the names of the three persons nominated by the previous government as the National Assembly (NA) members.

The 56-year-old was a minister of defence for nearly two years during her party's previous administration.

She will be administered the oath of office by the Chief Justice on Wednesday.
