Mourinho hits back at 'worst ever' Premier League manager De Boer

Marcus Rashford

"He's very young, he needs games".

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has hit back at former Crystal Palace manager Frank de Boer after the Netherlands worldwide said that it was a "pity" that Marcus Rashford was playing under Mourinho at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman lasted just 77 days after losing four consecutive league games without scoring a goal before being replaced by Roy Hodgson in September.

De Boer is the owner of the shortest reign as manager in Premier League history.

"Frank De Boer, seven matches seven defeats and zero goals".

De Boer suggested Mourinho was not the right manager to nurture Rashford's talents, with Mourinho quick to pour scorn on the views of a coach who has failed in his last two jobs at Inter Milan and Palace.

Rashford was given his first-team debut under Louis van Gaal in the 2015/16 season and has since scored 31 goals in 111 games in all competitions.

"If he was coached by Frank, he would learn how to lose because he lost every game". To his credit, he did win a League Cup contest though.

"Does he play every match from the start?"

Marcus Rashford's two goals at the weekend were met by delight by Manchester United fans but questions from elsewhere about why he wasn't getting as much football as they hoped but a stat proves that those questions were pretty unfounded.

It is a remarkable statistic that I was compelled to research after Mourinho addressed Rashford's development in Monday's pre-match press conference for the UEFA Champions League tie against Sevilla, telling reporters he believed Marcus was in the top five appearance makers of his tenure.

"The manager doesn't have to speak to me", said Rashford last Saturday.

Rashford's minutes have been limited since the arrival of Alexis Sanchez in January, but Mourinho insisted he was finding a balance between burning Rashford out and giving him enough experience.

But Rash is now set to begin tonight's last-16 second leg against Sevilla after the goalless first game in Spain. Mourinho said he did not know whether the midfielder would be available but Pogba had trained after the open part of Monday's session closed. "There comes a time, whether you like it or you don't like it, that your body tells you it is time to stop playing football", he said. "It's something that you have got to accept". "It's kind of been sorted out but we're still talking about it so there is nothing to totally confirm yet", he said.
