The school day had barely begun on Tuesday morning local time when the shooter, who has not been identified, shot a male and a female student at Great Mills High School before the campus security officer intervened, county Sheriff Timothy Cameron told a media conference. The school has since been put on lockdown and students and faculty members have been evacuated to a separate facility near the high school.
The high school is closed for the rest of the week and will reopen after spring break on April 2.

Cameron and Gov. Larry Hogan praised Gaskill for his quick action.
"It sure sounds like this is exactly the way it should have been handled", Hogan said.
The officer, Deputy First Class Blaine Gaskill, a six-year veteran in his first year at the high school, responded quickly, Cameron said.
The school has about 1,600 students and is near the Patuxent River Naval Air Station.
House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., whose district includes St. Mary's County, canceled his usual weekly briefing on Capitol Hill to go to the county to meet with parents at a center close to the Leonardtown High School.
"If you don't think this can happen at your school, you are sadly mistaken", he said.
Emma Gonzalez, a Stoneman Douglas student, tweeted her support on Tuesday for her peers at Great Mills.
"Less than a WEEK ago Great Mills High School students walked out with us to protest gun violence. now they're experiencing it for themselves", said Jaclyn Corin, a student fighting for gun reform.
When news of the shooting first broke, officials had said the event was contained, but there were reports of multiple injuries.
