Missing Purdue Nobel Laureate Found Alive, Wife Dead

Day after being reported missing, wife of Purdue professor found dead at Illinois landfill

The wife of Eiichi Negishi, a victor of the 2010 Nobel Prize in chemistry, has been found dead in Rockford, Illinois, with no foul play suspected, local police said Wednesday.

A missing IN woman is found dead Tuesday morning IN an Ogle County landfill. His wife, Sumire Negishi, was also missing. Police say the family had no indication the Negishis were in the Rockford area. Foul play is not suspected. Local law enforcement agencies are now leading the investigation.

82-year-old Dr. Negishi is a distiguished chemistry professor at Purdue University. He was transported by the New Milford Fire Department to a Rockford hospital for treatment.

Negishi and another Japanese scientist Akira Suzuki, along with American chemist Richard Heck, professor emeritus at the University of DE, shared the 2010 Nobel Prize in chemistry for their work on reactions to create complex organic compounds.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Sumire Negishi and offer our sincerest sympathies to the Negishi family from the entire Boilermaker family."
