Miami Open: Alexander Zverev wins another three-setter to reach fourth round

Thanasi Kokkinakis

Nick Kyrgios has started a Twitter feud with Fernando Verdasco after the Spaniard's fiery run-in with his Aussie mate Thanasi Kokkinakis at the Miami Open.

The 21-year-old said his Spanish rival's attitude was 'bull****' after their heated exchange. "That's my f--ing dad".

While Kyrgios waited for his match to start, the 17th seed posted his support for his Aussie compatriot along with a pointed remark aimed at Verdasco.

A heated Verdasco replied to Kyrgios with 'When you have the courage to put a tweet insulting another player you need to have the same to don't [sic] delete it, ' he wrote and blocked Kyrgios on Twitter. Thanks for blocking, I'm sure that took a lot of courage'.

In earlier action, Fernando Verdasco dug deep to earn a 3-6 6-4 7-6 (4) win over Australian qualifier Thanasi Kokkinakis to set up a fourth round clash against fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta.

Verdasco, who reached the Miami quarter-finals in 2009 and 2010, rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the third set and again from 3-0 down in the decisive tiebreaker before prevailing in a match that lasted almost three hours.

After the match, the pair engaged in a frosty handshake with it clear there was not much love lost between them.

Kyrgios, who enjoyed a quick 6-3 6-3 victory over the Italian Fognini later that day, did not let the spat end there and sent one final snide tweet.

"And this is the first time that I've played on this court".

"I know how it is, I've been playing professionally for 15 years, I'm not trying to disrespect him [Kokkinakis] or cut his rhythm or anything, but what I can not do is not stand up and say anything".

"I knew I just had to serve well, play aggressive and keep the points short".

He will meet fourth seed Alexander Zverev or veteran David Ferrer in the round of 16.

Verdasco battled to a 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7-4) win over the Australian, crushing the tennis player in the Miami Open.

Verdasco, who ended up winning the contest 3-6 6-4 7-6 (4), responded after almost three hours on court.
