Kirk Cousins close to signing three-year deal with Vikings

Breaking down the potential landing spots for Case Keenum

Cousins is reported to have dinner with team brass tomorrow night (get on that Manny's reservation ASAP) and will visit the Twin Cities Orthopedics Training Center on Thursday. As a result, the Redskins acquired fellow signal caller Alex Smith from the Kansas City Chiefs earlier in the offseason. Remember, Keenum is going into a new system with a different team.

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin tweeted that Cousins is a "hero" to other young players for getting a fully guaranteed contract.

They still only have one quarterback. If he views Keenum as the starter long-term, Elway would be in a strong position to trade out of the number five pick. And the debris from a flurry of quarterback moves is still settling across the league.

After sitting out the playoffs in each of the last two years following their Super Bowl 50 triumph, the Denver Broncos have apparently found their next signal-caller. But if the Broncos stay healthy on defense and Keenum is who they hope he can be, they can compete for the division title.

National Football League free agency opens Wednesday, March 14 at 4 p.m. and one of the most highly sought after players this offseason is a West Michigan native. From 1978-9 until now the Vikings have literally not had a quarterback play in full back-to-back seasons. Brock Osweiler isn't a great starter, but he's a capable backup that knows Mike McCoy's offense, and if something were to happen to Cousins, he could come in and get the job done. He had a career year last season with 3,547 passing yards, 22 TDs and a 67.6 completion rate in 2017. They are also expected to use the sixth pick in the draft on a quarterback, giving them multiple options beyond the upcoming season.

The Jets are also pursuing 25-year-old Teddy Bridgewater in free agency, according to various reports.

At the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine is where talk of Cousins to the Vikings really began to heat up. Denver is one above-average quarterback away from making a serious playoff run, but they are focusing in on Cousins to lead the way as their gunslinger. The Vikings weren't the first team to give up on Keenum, either. That's why they rushed him back against the Bears despite Keenum's good play last season.
