Budget carriers IndiGo and GoAir have cancelled more than 600 flights scheduled over the next few days after the Directorate General of Civil Aviation grounded A320 neo planes that ran on faulty Pratt & Whitney engines, PTI reported on Friday.
Going by the passenger load factor recorded for both these airlines in January (90%), the cancellation of 626 flights would hit an estimated one lakh passengers. Both the airlines together operate about 1200 flights daily and fly close to 50% domestic passengers in the country. GoAir announced on their website that 138 flights will be canceled from March 15-22. The airlines are also offering refunds and alternative flights to its customers suffering from the inconvenience caused by the airlines. IndiGo will not operate 36 flights between March 15 and March 21. On the whole, 138 flights stand cancelled. The revised schedule of Wadia group-promoted GoAir showed that the airline has cancelled seven daily flights to 10 destinations between March 16 and March 24 apart from cancelling six services per week between March 15 and March 22. Another 18 daily flights would remain cancelled between March 22 and March 24. While the airlines have said that choice of alternative flights and refund would be offered for the passengers, it was not immediately clear how the process would be implemented.
"We follow the process as specified by DGCA in its CAR [Civil Aviation Requirement]", an unidentified GoAir spokesperson told PTI.
A total of 14 A320 neo aircraft fitted with a specific series of engines - 11 are operated by IndiGo and three by GoAir - have now been grounded.
It, however, said Shenoys plea seeking various other directions to the authorities, including an order to ensure that all accidents are published on DGCAs website within 24 hours of its occurrence, shall be heard on March 20.
