Free for all in Gujarat Assembly

Ruckus in Gujarat Assembly Congress MLA Pratap Dudhat Hits BJP's Jagdish Panchal With Belt – Watch Video

The commotion compelled the Speaker to adjourn the House for 10 minutes which was later extended till 2.30 p.m.

After the attack on Panchal, the Speaker suspended Dudhat for the entire Budget Session of the Assembly.

At this point, BJP MLA Jagdish Panchal passed some remarks that prompted Congress legislator Pratap Dudhat as well as another Congress MLA to rush towards the Well of the House.

Indian democracy witnessed another low on Wednesday when MLAs of both Congress and BJP came to blows in the Gujarat assembly.

The commotion began during a discussion over tabling of the report of Justice DK Trivedi Commission in the Asaram Bapu case, The Hindu reported. However, as the Speaker did not allow Maadam to ask the question, two other Congress MLAs - Virji Thummar and Amrish Der - rushed to the well and started arguing.

Panchal, along with other BJP MLAs, registered an official complaint with the Speaker. "Our members were not allowed to speak in the House and when they tried, they were provoked by the ruling party members", said Leader of the Opposition Paresh Dhanani.

"This is a shameful incident which has never happened in the history of Gujarat assembly". One of the MLAs even broke a microphone and hurled it at one of the members. We, as opposition, have every right to know about such public issues. This enraged BJP MLAs, who started thrashing Dudhat, pushed him towards the floor of the house and kicked him hard.

Panchal denied the charge. "In fact, outside the House, Congress legislator Baldev Thakor threatened to break my legs".

"The treasury benches have been trying to silence the voice of Opposition and as part of their strategy have been instigating our first-time legislators for last eight days".

Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja was holding a meeting with Chief Minister Vijay Rupani over the incident.
