Former Redskins DE Trent Murphy to sign 3-year deal with Bills

NFL linebacker Trent Murphy

The New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are reportedly among the three finalists to land Washington Redskins outside linebacker Trent Murphy when he becomes a free agent Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET. The 27-year-old Murphy, who the Washington Redskins drafted in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft, seemingly bid farewell to the franchise in a tweet Wednesday morning.

Murphy, who did not play the entire 2017 regular season due to a torn ACL and MCL suffered in Washington's first preseason game, was supposed to miss the first four games of last season due to a violation of the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Barring the Bills trading or releasing Hughes or Lawson, signing Murphy offers Buffalo an upgrade over reserve defensive ends Ryan Davis and Eddie Yarbrough.

Murphy, 27, missed last season after tearing his left ACL and MCL in an August 10 preseason game at Baltimore.

Ahead of the 2017 season, Murphy was suspended by the National Football League for four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancement drugs. Murphy also forced three fumbles. Trey Flowers led the team with 6.5 sacks last season. He started 22 games during that time.
