Evacuations ordered ahead of next Southern California storm

Mandatory evacuation issued, Carpinteria's risk downgraded

The evacuation orders impact the burn scars of the Thomas, Whittier and Sherpa fires, which left large swaths of land scorched and unable to handle heavy rainfall at rates of more than a half-inch per hour.

For future storms, including those expected to arrive later this week, the County will now take into account several factors to determine if only the Extreme Risk area, noted as red in the Debris Flow Risk Map, should be evacuated, or if both the red Extreme and yellow High risk areas should be evacuated.

National Weather Service forecasters have issued a flash flood watch from Tuesday morning until Tuesday afternoon. However, those evacuation orders were lifted at 10:30 a.m.

Officials has released an evacuation map and recommended residents go to ReadySBC.org for updated information on the weather conditions. Officials want everyone out by 8 p.m.

A news conference is scheduled for Monday afternoon to provide more details.

The incoming storm also prompted voluntary evacuations for neighborhoods in Matilija Canyon and the North Fork area, north of Ojai in Ventura County.

An evacuation center had been opened at the Goleta Valley Community Center at 5679 Hollister Ave.in Goleta.

A second storm is expected to bring rain of.15 to.3 inches per hour on Wednesday night, and a heavier storm is taking shape for the weekend.

Tuesday's storm is the first of three systems forecast to move through the area over the next week.

Snow levels will lower to between 4,000 and 5,000 feet with this colder storm.
