Delhi: Uber 'driver' locks woman inside cab, sexually harasses her

Delhi woman locked in car and threatened by driver in Uber cab

A police investigation revealed later that he wasn't the registered driver of the vehicle.

According to the Uber's statement, the company have initiated an action against the driver and are cooperating with the Haryana police in the investigation as well. She also found that the cab has not commercial number plate instead, it had a white number plate. "The accused driver has been identified as Sanjeev alias Sanju". She also told police that when she tried to talk to a friend over the phone, the driver increased the volume of music in the vehicle.

She alleged that the driver took a different route than the one she usually takes, and when she asked him to stop the vehicle at a traffic signal, he shut the doors using the central lock and threatened her.

The police team reached the village on the intervening night of March 9 and March 10 and searched for the fake Uber vehicle.

"We immediately removed the driver partner's access to the app and will take strict action against him for letting an unregistered driver without a licence access his account and take trips via the app", the PTI quoted the spokesperson as saying. There was, however, no response to a query as to how a private vehicle with tinted glasses was allegedly pressed into service.

The woman grew suspicious of the driver as his face did not match with the image of the driver provided by Uber on their app, they said. As per police reports, the victim took the cab even after noticing that the cab was missing the yellow number plate. "We will also book the car's owner and issue a notice to Uber", said Khan.

She panicked when she realised that the driver allegedly chose an isolated route over her preferred route. He drove the vehicle though he was not registered as a Uber driver. "She screamed for help, but was unable to draw anyone's attention", said Khan.

When the auto slowed down at a CNG station near GTK depot, she took the opportunity to unlock the door and jumped out of the vehicle.

A case of sexual harassment, kidnapping, wrongful confinement and criminal intimidation has been registered against the driver. "Simultaneously, we sought the cab details from Uber", said the DCP. The driver too left the spot with the vehicle.
