Indicating that there were "issues of financial viability" on some routes, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said that his government will soon clear the Delhi Metro's long pending Phase IV expansion project.
The over 20 km-long Majlis Park-Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus section of the Pink Line is all set to be thrown open to the public from tomorrow evening, with an end-to-end travel time of 34 minutes.
The Pink Line, also known as the Ring Road Line, is an nearly circular line that passes alongside the busy Ring Road in the national capital in a U-shaped pattern, that witnesses massive traffic jams every day. By the end of 2018, Delhi is expected to add close to 100 km of metro lines, making its metro network the 8th largest in the world.
"Delhi metro is Delhi's pride, " he said.
The circular Pink Line will eventually turn the Delhi Metro network into a web by connecting numerous existing radial corridors at 10 different interchange points, including the Airport Express line at Dhaula Kuan station. The total duration will take around 40 minutes. It is going to largely help the students who travel by road from North campus.
This section is part of the 59 km-long Majlis Park - Shiv Vihar corridor (Pink Line - Line 7) of Delhi Metro's Phase 3.
An official said that Ticket charges from Vishavidyalaya to South campus will cost Rs 50 while Majlis Park to South campus will cost Rs 40.
The Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), which inspected the stretch from February 26 to 28, has given the clearance for launching operations on the new line.
The stations are - Majlis Park, Azadpur, Shalimar Bagh, Netaji Subhash Place, Shakurpur, Punjabi Bagh West, ESI Hospital, Rajouri Garden, Mayapuri, Naraina Vihar, Delhi Cantt and Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus.
Azadpur Station (with Yellow Line) is one of the three interchange stations on the Pink Line stretch that opened today, the other two being, Netaji Subhash Place (with Red Line) and Rajouri Garden (Blue Line).
For the first time, travelators are being installed on foot over bridges in the vicinity of interchange hubs, with the travelator at Durgabai Deshmukh metro station stretching over almost a kilometre to connect it with Dhaula Kuan station on the Airport Express line.
