Defuse tension along Assam-Mizoram Border- Rajnath Singh

Mizoram simmers over border dispute scribes attacked again

Mizoram Chief Secretary Arvind Ray likewise reached his Assam partner V K Pipersenia and both the sides consented to hold chats on the outskirt question, it said.

He also directed the union home secretary to convene a chief secretary-level meeting of the two states in the next week.

In a letter to Chief Minister, Mizoram, Lal Thanhawla today, Union Home Minister Singh urged him to prevent the asssembly of people at Bairabi as a step towards defusing the situation.

Mizoram working journalists under the aegis of Mizoram Journalist Association (MJA) on Tuesday staged a peaceful sit-in-demonstration in all parts of the state seeking justice for journalists and blaming the Assam police for their alleged brutality and highhandedness against Mizoram journalists during a "clash" over border dispute last week.

Lal Thanhawla said that there had been border disputes with Assam like other such instances with neighbouring states which sometimes culminated into violent clashes causing hardships especially to those in the fringe areas. "Some are trying to create tension between Assam and Mizoram for gains with political motivation".

Officials in Assam said the Mizo students encroached upon the land that falls under Assam's Ramnathpur police station, and that Google Maps clearly indicated the place was within Assam.

A report from Assam's Hailakandi also said the MZP workers were retreating from the border. Stating that the alleged brutal attack on students journalists as "unfortunate", the minister said such "inhuman action should not be repeated anymore".

The Assam Police denied the charge and guaranteed that the nonconformists were just pushed back when they endeavored to interfere into the state.

The police had on Wednesday, clamped prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPc with immediate effect of Hailakandi district, bordering Mizoram.

On Monday, the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), an influential students' body, and other organisations held statewide protests demanding resignation of the Congress government for allegedly failing to protect Mizoram's territory and students.

This was conveyed to Hailakandi Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan by his Kolasib counterpart R Zarzosanga, an Assam government release here on Saturday.

MZP leaders and activists have been camping in the area to construct a rest house to be called Zofate Chawlhbuk on the land donated by Ch Chhungas widow to the student organisation, the leader said.
