Celtics dealt blows with Smart, Theis injuries, dodge bullet with Irving

More bad Celtics' injury news, Marcus Smart reportedly has torn thumb ligament

The news keeps getting worse for the Boston Celtics.

Smart will seek a second opinion this week to determine the severity of the tendon damage and whether surgery is needed.

The Celtics may have caught a break with Kyrie Irving's left knee soreness, which is believed to be no more than tendonitis and will not require much time off, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Now this: Marcus Smart has a torn ligament in his thumb.

The C's hard-nosed guard injured his thumb during Boston's loss to the Indiana Pacers on Sunday night.

The Celtics are still unsure whether Marcus Smart will be able to play again this season.

Smart's injury also leaves the Celtics with few healthy backcourt players until Kyrie Irving and Jaylen Brown return from their respective injuries. News of Smart's injury trickled out Monday, shortly after it was announced big man Daniel Theis would miss the rest of the season with a torn meniscus. Though he initially said he would be "all right", it's clear the Celtics now fear he could miss extended time.

Smart is averaging 10.2 points, 4.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 29.9 minutes this season.
