Brown Supports Trump's Tariffs On Steel, Aluminum

Billionaire Woody Johnson was appointed ambassador to the UK last August

The announcement comes amid a last-minute lobbying effort to blunt the impact of tariffs.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the USA wants to negotiate exemptions for steel and aluminum tariffs before they take effect in two weeks as pressure grows from allies who are threatening retaliation if the duties are applied to them. We just want fairness because we have not been treated fairly by other countries, ? he said.

"We are disappointed, to say the least, that the Trump administration would impose a potentially debilitating tariff on aluminium imports from the Kitimat smelter", said O'Driscoll. "Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum will only come off if new & fair NAFTA agreement is signed".

White House officials even say the specifics of the plan remain fluid and it's unclear when they will be finalized.

The White House said Wednesday that Mexico, Canada and other countries may be spared from tariffs under national security "carve-outs". We have a trade surplus with Australia.

By offering countries a way to escape the tariffs, Trump might have eased the risk of a destructive trade war.

Under the most severe scenario being weighed, the US could impose tariffs on a wide range of Chinese imports, from shoes and clothing to consumer electronics, according to two people familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions aren't public.

The two proclamations signed by President Trump include some important details for companies that are concerned about the impact of the tariffs on their business operations.

The looming departure of White House economic adviser Gary Cohn, a former Goldman Sachs executive who has opposed the promised tariffs, set off anxiety among business leaders and investors anxious about a potential trade war. They will likely result in higher prices for all steel, and are expected to trigger a series of WTO complaints and retaliatory actions by US trading partners. Next to him are, from left, Steven Mnuchin, Treasury secretary; Wilbur Ross, secretary of commerce; Robert Lighthizer, the United States trade representative; and Peter Navarro, an adviser on trade. "We're not trying to blow up the world".

The fact that Canada might be included on the initial hit list had become a political sore spot for the administration, as US critics of the move ridiculed it by zeroing on the idea of national-security tariffs against a peaceful next-door neighbour and defence ally. At the same time, we have some friends and some enemies where we have been tremendously taken advantage of over the years on trade and on military, ? he said as he singled out Germany as a bad actor likely to face tariffs.

"Many members said they had fears of tit-for-tat retaliation which could spiral out of control", the trade official told reporters.

As it happens, a staunch US ally, Canada, is by far the biggest foreign supplier of both metals to the United States and therefore stood to be hurt the most by the tariffs. "There's no tax", he said.

In a media briefing, he expressed frustration at the way the tariffs have been characterized, referring repeatedly to the "fake news", the lobbyists and the "swamp things" that he said exaggerated the ill effects while fighting the measures.
