Black Panther Rakes In $500m In 17 Days

Black Panther opened to record-breaking box office success that continued throughout the month, helping February hit the $1 billion mark for the very first time. It's highly likely it will pass Marvel's The Avengers' $623 million gross as well.

"Both newcomers performed to expectations but had to compete in a marketplace totally dominated by 'Black Panther, '" Dergarabedian said.

That pushes its domestic total to $501 million, while its overseas tally of $397 million brings its worldwide total to $898 million. It's the third fastest film to reach the $500 million plateau.

Another new release, "Death Wish", MGM's reboot of the Charles Bronson action franchise starring Bruce Willis, was third with $13 million.

The film earned $428.8 million domestically in February, good for 43 percent of ticket sales.

Game Night makes its debut at number 4 this week with just over a million for the weekend and finishing off the top 5 is Lady Bird.


Now in its 3rd week of release the film still manages to take over £3 million which brings the films total United Kingdom gross to just over |£35 million.

Natalie Portman's sci-fi-thriller Annihilation didn't hold up as well, dropping 49% in its second weekend to $5.6 million for sixth place.

"Black Panther" has now grossed $500 million domestically after three weeks of release. It also was robust internationally, racking up $56.2 million over the weekend to bring its global total to $897.7 million. It's earned $393 million domestic and $536 million overseas for $928 million total.

The top 10 was filled out by Universal's Fifty Shades Freed with $95.9 million grossed domestically so far, Fox's The Greatest Showman ending its 11-week run with $164.6 million and last week's Every Day in tenth place.

New to theaters in limited release were Sony Classics' Foxtrot ($36,786 on four screens) and Hannover House's Death House ($10,295 on one screen).
