Ataribox Gets New Name, Pre-Order Details Coming In April

The Ataribox is now the Atari VCS and will get a release date soon

The company hasn't mentioned a game lineup, and noted that the "objective" is to announce the pre-order date sometime this April. And the VCS part really screams '70s and '80s gaming! Something for everyone, in other words, with the joystick becoming a necessary component of the system when you consider that the VCS will play retro Atari games.

The iconic video game brand is showing off the latest version of the box at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, where 25,000 developers are gathering this week.

What was once known as the Ataribox has a new name: Atari VCS.

The one thing we do know is that it will be priced competitively, as Atari has previously revealed that they expect the Atari VCS to cost between $250 and $300.

"With the Atari VCS name, we know how important it is to get everything completely right and that's why we briefly paused an imminent launch late previous year", said Michael Arzt, Atari COO of Connected Devices. With the Atari VCS name, we know how important it is to get everything completely right and that's why we briefly paused an imminent launch late a year ago. The Atari VCS will of course serve up lots of classic content, but it is so much more than a "retro-box".

The Atari VCS, Classic Joystick and Modern Controller prototypes will be shown in-person at pre-scheduled press appointments during GDC 2018 on March 21 and 22, 2018. It was a hard decision with the countdown underway, but we weren't willing to go forward with even one thing out of alignment. It is a new connected device designed for today's living room, the company said. Atari didn't offer more details on the pricing, components, or other details. The console itself will apparently contain both retro games and new releases, all built around an open Linux OS, although what kind of games will be available on the device specifically remains to be seen.

The last time Atari shipped one of their own consoles was the Atari Jaguar back in 1993, so their return to the fold is rather a to-do for fans of classic gaming. This approach means that as well as being a great gaming device, Ataribox is also a full PC experience for the TV, bringing you streaming, applications, social, browsing, music, and more.
